The betrayal

I knew something was wrong when Hutch walked into my bar.
Alone.
Without his better half.

And then he started to drink. Didn't tell me what was the matter, just ordered beer after beer. I kept waiting, watching him. Sooner of later he'd have to tell me. But when he finally talked, I wasn't ready for what he was saying.

„He betrayed me, Hug. He betrayed my trust.“

„Now that doesn't sound like the Starsky I know.“ I tell him.
Hutch drains his beer, his speech is slightly slurred. Then he looks at me, lost.

„He just doesn't care, Hug. He never did and this proves it.“

„That ain't true. Starsky cares a lot. He loves you, that's why he did it.“

As soon as I've said the words I immediately realized that it had been a mistake. I saw how all the blood went from his face, knowing I'd screwed up, big time.

He hadn't known.

But it was too late to take them back now. I try to apologize but he doesn't want to hear. Just waves me off, orders another beer and walks to the back.

And now I have to call Starsky, tell him the truth.
